January 2026 Anime Release Date List
January 3, 2026: Fate/strange Fake and Sentenced to Be a Hero
Fate/strange Fake premiered on 3 January, bringing another entry to the expansive Fate franchise. The story centres on a distorted version of the Holy Grail War, where competing Masters and Servants become involved in a dangerous conflict. Its supernatural battles and complicated alliances make it an appealing choice for established Fate fans.
Sentenced to Be a Hero also premiered on 3 January. The dark fantasy series explores a world where becoming a hero is a punishment rather than a reward. Convicted criminals must fight terrifying enemies, creating a harsh setting filled with danger, sacrifice and difficult choices.
January 4, 2026: Hana-Kimi and MF Ghost Season 3
The schedule continued on 4 January with Hana-Kimi, an anime adaptation of the popular romantic comedy manga. The story follows a girl who enters a boys’ school to get closer to an athlete she admires. Its mix of school life, mistaken identities and relationships offers a lighter alternative to winter’s darker action series.
MF Ghost Season 3 also arrived on 4 January. Set in a future where electric vehicles dominate the roads, the racing series follows competitive drivers in a world where petrol-powered sports cars still attract passionate fans. Expect high-speed races, technical driving challenges and intense competition.
Other releases on the same date included Journal with Witch, Kunon the Sorcerer Can See and The Daily Life of a Part-time Torturer. Together, these premieres demonstrated the season’s broad range of storytelling styles.
January 5, 2026: My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Season 2
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Season 2 premiered on 5 January. The series expands the superhero universe by focusing on people who protect others without official hero licences. Rather than following only the celebrated professionals, it explores ordinary citizens who take risks to help their communities.
The second season continued the story of Koichi Haimawari and his fellow vigilantes. Fans could look forward to further character development, dangerous encounters and a closer look at the challenges facing people outside the official hero system.
Golden Kamuy: The Final Chapter also began on 5 January. The historical adventure follows the search for hidden Ainu gold in early twentieth-century Hokkaido. Its combination of survival, military conflict, cultural history and dark humour helped establish the series as a distinctive adventure story.
Wash It All Away offered a gentler change of pace. Its everyday setting and relaxed atmosphere suited viewers looking for a calmer alternative to intense battles and high-stakes fantasy.
January 8, 2026: Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3
One of January’s biggest anime events was the premiere of Jujutsu Kaisen: The Culling Game Part 1 on 8 January. The third season continues the supernatural action story after the devastating events surrounding Shibuya.
The Culling Game introduces a dangerous conflict involving sorcerers, cursed techniques and deadly rules. Yuji Itadori and his allies face new threats as they attempt to protect those caught in the unfolding crisis. The storyline builds on earlier events while expanding the series’ complicated supernatural world.
For viewers who enjoy fast-paced fights, powerful characters and darker themes, this was one of the month’s major releases. However, newcomers would benefit from watching the earlier seasons first because the new story relies heavily on previous developments.
January 9, 2026: Hell Mode and Other New Series
Hell Mode: The Hardcore Gamer Dominates in Another World With Garbage Balancing arrived on 9 January. The fantasy series follows a gamer who finds himself in a challenging new world after choosing an unusually difficult game setting. His progress depends on patience, strategy and steady improvement rather than easy victories.
The series suits viewers who enjoy isekai adventures, character progression and game-inspired fantasy mechanics. Its premise also gives the protagonist a clear challenge from the beginning.
Other January releases included High School! Kimengumi and The Darwin Incident. These titles provided alternatives for viewers interested in comedy or more thought-provoking drama.
January 10–11, 2026: Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling and Hell’s Paradise Season 2
The middle of the month brought several more notable premieres. Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling arrived on 10 January, following a protagonist who must survive and grow after being reborn as a vulnerable dragon. Its appeal lies in the familiar isekai concept of gradual evolution, exploration and increasingly powerful abilities.
Hell’s Paradise Season 2 premiered on 11 January. The dark fantasy series continues the dangerous search for the elixir of immortality on a mysterious island. Gabimaru and the other characters face powerful enemies and disturbing discoveries as they struggle to survive.
The sequel builds on the original season’s blend of brutal combat, supernatural mysteries and questions about survival. Viewers who enjoyed its unsettling atmosphere and elaborate action sequences had another major series to follow.
In the Clear Moonlit Dusk also premiered on 11 January. This romantic drama follows a high school student whose appearance and personality attract attention. The story explores identity, attraction and the complications that arise when someone challenges another person’s carefully maintained self-image.
January 14, 2026: Oshi no Ko Season 3
Oshi no Ko Season 3 arrived on 14 January, continuing the anime’s exploration of fame, entertainment and the hidden costs of celebrity culture. The story combines mystery and psychological drama with an examination of the pressures faced by performers.
The new season continues the characters’ efforts to navigate the entertainment industry while confronting personal ambitions and unresolved questions. Its appeal extends beyond idol culture because it examines manipulation, public image and the gap between appearances and reality.
Fans following the previous seasons could expect further developments in the central mystery. New viewers, however, should start with the first season to understand the characters’ relationships and motivations.
January 16, 2026: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 premiered on 16 January. The acclaimed fantasy series follows Frieren, an elven mage whose exceptionally long lifespan gives her a different perspective on friendship, memory and loss.
After the events of the first season, Frieren continues travelling with Fern and Stark. Their journey explores new places and challenges while developing the relationships at the heart of the story.
Unlike action-heavy fantasy series, Frieren balances magical encounters with quiet emotional moments. Its thoughtful pacing and exploration of time make it a strong choice for viewers who prefer character-driven storytelling.
January 24, 2026: Medalist Season 2
Medalist Season 2 premiered on 24 January, bringing another chapter of competitive figure skating to the screen. The sports drama follows athletes working towards ambitious goals despite limited experience, difficult circumstances and intense competition.
Its focus on training, mentorship and personal determination gives the series an emotional foundation. Viewers can follow the characters’ progress as they develop their skills and face the pressure of competitive skating.
The later premiere date also made it a useful addition for viewers who wanted another series after the season’s biggest early releases.
What Genres Dominated the January 2026 Anime Season?
Action and dark fantasy attracted considerable attention during January. Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, Hell’s Paradise Season 2 and Sentenced to Be a Hero offered supernatural conflicts, dangerous missions and high-stakes battles.
Fantasy remained equally important, with Frieren Season 2, Hell Mode and Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling delivering different approaches to magical worlds. Some focused on emotional development, while others emphasised survival and character progression.
Romance and drama also had a strong presence. Hana-Kimi and In the Clear Moonlit Dusk explored relationships, while Oshi no Ko Season 3 examined fame and ambition. Meanwhile, MF Ghost Season 3 and Medalist Season 2 catered to fans of competitive sports.
This variety made the winter season appealing to viewers with very different preferences. Rather than relying on a single trend, January combined established franchises with adaptations and new concepts.
Conclusion
The January 2026 anime release date list delivered a varied winter season filled with major sequels, fresh adaptations and exciting new stories. Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2, Hell’s Paradise Season 2 and Oshi no Ko Season 3 stood out among the month’s most anticipated releases.
However, the season offered much more than established franchises. Newcomers such as Sentenced to Be a Hero and Hana-Kimi introduced different worlds and characters, while MF Ghost Season 3 and Medalist Season 2 appealed to sports anime fans.
